Rick Addante will be presenting data on ERPs of recognition memory processes, and how ERPs can be used as dependent variables to investigate different types of memory, namely, Recollection and Familiarity. He will briefly review some background information establishing some ERP effects as robust electrophysiological correlates of recollection and familiarity, identify a few shortcomings in the literature, and then present some of his current data that may inform these gaps using a novel behavioral paradigm that emphasizes the sensitivity and precision of the ERP technique. He will then present his approach to using the FN400 and LPC ERP effects to studying memory in neuropsychological patients with medial temporal lobe damage, and how this may inform a highly controversial debate in broader neuroscience about how memory systems may be processed in the medial temporal lobe.
