“Expression in Speech and Music: Parallels and Contrasts”
Petri Laukka, PhD (Department of Psychology, University of Uppsala, Sweden)
Abstract: Both speakers and music performers may add variation (i.e., “expression”) to speech/music by manipulating various properties of the sound, including frequency, time, amplitude, and timbre. Two main functions of these expressive variations are to clarify grammatical/musical structure and to communicate emotional intent. In this talk I will briefly review similarities between expression in speech and music, with a focus on how emotions are perceived and communicated. I will also present some ongoing research projects related to the topic.
